 Are dental X-rays safe for my child?

Yes, modern dental imaging is safe. We use digital X-ray technology, which is a huge leap forward from the old-fashioned film used years ago. Digital sensors actually reduce radiation exposure by up to 90% compared to traditional film.

 To put the numbers in perspective, a single digital dental image typically exposes a child to between 0.2 and 5 microsieverts of radiation. 

That's roughly the same amount of radiation your child naturally absorbs from the environment just by living on Earth for one day. It's also significantly less radiation than they'd receive during a standard cross-country airplane flight.

 Our team follows the ALARA principle, which stands for "As Low As Reasonably Achievable." This means we only take the images that are absolutely necessary for your child's specific health needs, and we "child-size" the settings to ensure the lowest possible dose.

Why can't the dentist just look at the teeth?

A visual exam is great for checking the surfaces of the teeth, but it can't see through enamel or look between the teeth. Many childhood cavities start in the gaps between molars where toothbrush bristles can't reach.

 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 1 in 5 children aged 6-8 years have untreated tooth decay. Because baby teeth have thinner enamel than adult teeth, a tiny cavity can turn into a painful infection quickly if it isn't caught early.

New safety standards for your peace of mind

In a surprising 2024 update, the American Dental Association (ADA) noted that heavy lead aprons and thyroid collars are no longer recommended for dental imaging. Modern machines are now so precise that the radiation these aprons were meant to block is nonexistent.
